Before an artwork exists, there is a period in which nothing appears to be happening. It is not a matter of inspiration or planning. It is a phase of sustained attention in which ideas have not yet taken form.
During this time, materials may be present but remain unused. What occupies the studio instead is a sense of pressure without direction. There is an awareness that something is developing, paired with the understanding that forcing it into shape too early would be counterproductive.
This phase accounts for much of the work, although it leaves little evidence behind.
Resistance is common here. Not reluctance, but friction between thought and action. Ideas arise briefly and then recede. Some return over time. Most do not. Distinguishing between the two is learned slowly, largely through experience.
Nothing is made because making would fix the work too early.
The duration of this phase varies. It may pass quickly or extend over weeks. From the outside, it resembles inactivity. From within the studio, it requires sustained effort. There are no visible markers of progress, only the decision to remain attentive.
Sketching may occur, but it is not preparatory in the conventional sense. These marks are not studies. They function as tests, used to determine whether a gesture approaches what is forming or prematurely defines it.
In many cases, the result is premature definition.
When the artwork begins, it does not feel like a starting point. It feels as though a process already underway has shifted into visibility. Decisions have been made, though not always consciously. The hand follows a line of thought that has been developing without language.
For this reason, the period before making is not rushed. Working too quickly at this stage tends to narrow the work’s possibilities. The concern is not speed, but accuracy.
The artwork does not begin with the first mark.
It begins when attention can no longer be deferred.
